68 year-old Jan Donaldson, of San Rafael, sent shockwaves through the temples of the glitterati after wandering into the Met Gala under the impression that the museum was free for seniors on Mondays.
Donaldson, who was in New York visiting her son, scuttled efficiently through the scrum of celebrities entering the event using Marin-honed trail etiquette. That’s how she found herself alone in front of the waiting cameras, where she stopped to dig in her pocket for some homemade fruit leather – and became a star.
Fashion world-experts say we’re now living in a post-Jan landscape. “This was no mere provocation,’” said one Vogue commentator, of Jan’s iconic ensemble. “This was Martin Luther nailing his theses to the door.” He explained that the sight of Jan – uncontrived, ergonomic, carefree Jan – had instantly revealed the entire beau monde to be a craven charade. “We’re all insane,” he added. “We’re sick. We need help. We need Jan Donaldson, 68, of San Rafael.”
